How to Make an Herbal Cough Syrup

What is it?
Herbal cough syrup is a natural, plant-based preparation used to soothe the throat, calm coughs, and support respiratory health. Unlike conventional cough syrups that often contain artificial ingredients or suppressants, herbal syrups work in harmony with the body, supporting healing while easing discomfort.

What is it used for?
These syrups are typically used for dry, irritated coughs, wet or productive coughs, lingering chest congestion, and sore throats. Depending on the herbs used, a syrup can be soothing, expectorant (helps clear mucus), antitussive (calms coughing), or antimicrobial. They are safe for most people, including children, when made with care and appropriate herbs.

Basic Herbal Cough Syrup Recipe

  1. Choose your herbs (typically a blend of soothing and expectorant plants).

  2. Make a strong decoction by simmering the herbs in water for 20-45 minutes.

  3. Strain the liquid and return it to the pot.

  4. Simmer gently to reduce the liquid by about half for concentration.

  5. Add raw honey (about 1 cup honey to every 1 cup decoction).

  6. Stir well, bottle, and label.

  7. Store in the fridge and use within 2–3 months.
